YouTube Down, Pornhub Up

YouTube experienced a rare global service outage on October 16th, between 9:30 pm and 10:45 pm Eastern time. Mashable checked with us to see if YouTube’s disruption an effect on Pornhub traffic, and it certainly did. When you can’t tube, you fap instead!

Traffic to Pornhub surged during the outage, reaching 21% above daily averages at 10 pm. That’s a significant increase by millions of additional viewers during Pornhub’s peak evening hours.

During the outage, our statisticians also found some search terms had increased in popularity well above their average levels on October 16th. Searches for “asmr” increased by 201%, as people looking for an Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response were just as likely to find that on Pornhub as YouTube. Searches containing “YouTube” increased by 183%, along with other terms likely to appear on both streaming sites including “wwe”, “bowsette“, “fortnite“, “minecraft“, “game”, “pokemon“, “celebrity” (nsfw), “twitch”, “overwatch” and “halloween“.

2018 Winter Olympics

The 2018 Winter Olympics opened February 9th in Pyeongchang, South Korea. As people all over the world tuned in to watch their favorite winter sports, the excitement soon flowed over to Pornhub where searches containing “Olympic” and “Olympics” grew by up to 561% compared to average levels.

Hawaii on Alert

On Saturday January 13, residents all across Hawaii received a text message at 8:07am stating that a ballistic missile was on it’s way to their island and advised they should take shelter immediately. With international tensions currently at a high, it’s no surprise that the warning was taken very, very seriously. We can’t begin to imagine what would go through someone’s mind after reading that message, but based purely on the traffic numbers, it’s NOT to be watching porn (nsfw).

Based on real-time, per-minute pageviews, and compared to levels on the previous two Saturdays, our statisticians found a precipitous drop in traffic at 8:07am immediately after the warning was sent out. By 8:23am, traffic was a massive -77% below that of a typical Saturday. As residents were notified around 8:45 that the initial warning was sent in error, traffic began to return to normal and Hawaiians collectively breathed a sigh of relief. Those seeking further relief, headed back to Pornhub where pageviews surged +48% above typical levels at 9:01am.

Like watching a good Pornhub video, anticipation of the release had been building up, and once the moment arrived, dedicated gamers thought of little else – including visiting Pornhub. Over the past year Pornhub Insights has released a plethora of data on the United States of America including the Top Search Terms in major cities, as well as posts comparing porn viewership in Red vs Blue States and even States with Gay Marriage. This time around, our friends at Mashable asked the Pornhub statisticians to update them on the state of the union. From East to West, North to South, what US states spend the most time on Pornhub, and when do they like to watch porn. Roughly 40% of Pornhub’s traffic comes from the good ol’ US of A, so we better get started crunching the numbers.

2014 Stanley Cup Finals

The 2014 Stanley Cup finals have drawn to a close, so the Pornhub Statisticians stopped to take a look at how hockey viewership affected traffic to everyone’s favorite porn site. We’ve seen in the past that televised sports events like the 2014 Superbowl, the 2014 NBA Finals and the 2013 Stanley Cup can have a major effect on Pornhub traffic when fans choose tuning-in over turning-on (at least for a few hours).
