I have been reading some of the commentary concerning the NFL combine, a huge tryout for college football players in front of a host of NFL team representatives. Coverage of the young men's performance obsessively focuses on their "time in the 40." That is, how quickly they can run in a straight line, unopposed, for 40 yards.

That is a skill that is utterly unrelated to anything which will determine there professional success. 300 lb offensive lineman do not run for 40 yards for any reason, except, I suppose, to get to the head of the dinner line. And while wide receivers do indeed run quickly down the field, they do not run in a straight line, unopposed. And, ultimately, their success is determined by their ability to catch and hold on to a football.

Why on earth does anyone care about how quickly they can run a 40-yard dash? We care precisely and solely because we can measure their performance with such exquisite precision.

I have at least 28 words and phrases for I hate fucking snow. But now that it is shiveled hot tub with the grand kuds.

 

Like myself I bet you don't know you have been deprived if you have never worn a snow hat. Which is when it's still snowing hard enough to see snow on the top of your head in the hot tub. And that us not good enough. So you grab the big strainer scoop it full of snow and whack on the top of heads so everyone is wearing a snow hat.

And while some might poo poo that I am here to tell you that sitting in the hot tub with a couple of inches of snow on your head facilitates mental clarity.
